Martedì 2 febbraio 2021 il Congresso degli Stati Uniti ha approvato la proposta di legge federale del senatore Chris Murphy e della rappresentante Lori Trahan, entrambi del Partito democratico, che rende illegale per la NCAA o qualsiasi altra associazione sportiva universitaria porre restrizioni di qualsiasi natura su accordi di sponsorizzazione sottoscritti dagli atleti.
"Lo sport universitario di alto livello non è differente da quello delle grandi leghe professionistiche" dice Murphy "e non possiamo più negare agli atleti di guadagnare denaro grazie al loro talento. È anche una questione di diritti civili: se gli allenatori universitari, in prevalenza bianchi, possono stipulare qualsiasi tipo di accordo commerciale, perché i migliori atleti, in prevalenza neri, non dovrebbero poter fare altrettanto?"
