Il tecnico cinese, Xu Guoyi , stimatissimo in Cina e mentore di molti atleti olimpici fra i quali Ye Shiwen , è morto all'età di 50 anni a seguito di un tumore al cervello diagnosticatogli nel 2015, malattia che nascose per diversi anni per non influire sulla preparazione dei suoi nuotatori ai Giochi olimpici di Rio 2016. Xu è stato un nuotatore professionista, si ritirò dalle competizioni nel 1993 e divenne allenatore, fra gli atleti di spicco che ha allenato risultano la due volte campionessa olimpica Ye Shiwen che a Londra sorprese il mondo, il campione del mondo dei 100 dorso del mondiale di Budapest 2017, Xu Jiayu e molti altri ancora, Fu Yuanhui , Li Zhuhao . In più occasioni è stato relatore alla FINA World Aquatics Convention, segue il suo intervento all'edizione del 2012 dopo il doppio oro olimpici vinto con la Shiwen nei 200 e 400 misti.
