Il governo giapponese ha deciso di mettere in quarantena preventiva per 14 giorni tutti gli atleti, i tecnici e gli ufficiali di gara provenienti da paesi nei quali si sono registrate varianti del virus Covid-19: Regno Unito, Francia, Italia e Sudafrica.
La misura restrittiva durerà almeno sino alla fine di gennaio, ed è conseguente ai timori di una nuova ondata pandemica dopo che nelle ultime settimane a Tokyo si è tornati a registrare più di mille nuove infezioni giornaliere (1337 il 30 dicembre), con oltre quattromila casi a livello nazionale.
La mutazione del virus è un'ulteriore minaccia allo svolgimento dei Giochi nell'estate 2021, anche se CIO e Comitato organizzatore continuano a dirsi certi che la cerimonia inaugurale si svolgerà regolarmente il 23 luglio.
