Emma McKeon: “L’Australia brucia, aiutateci”

La nuotatrice australiana Emma McKeon, oro nella 4×100 stile libero a Rio 2016, insieme alla sua famiglia di campioni (il padre Ron e il fratello David hanno fatto parte delle rappresentative olimpiche, la madre Suzie ha partecipato ai Giochi del Commonwealth) lanciano un appello per aiutare i connazionali che hanno perso la casa negli incendi che stanno devastando le coste meridionale del paese.

It is so hard to truly understand the level of devastation and suffering happening right now across the country from these fires. I am so grateful to the relentless work and sacrifice from the firies, most of who are volunteers, saving thousands of people’s homes and lives, and still continuing. From being down at Lake Conjola over the last week, you can feel the way the community has come together to support eachother. Everyone across Australia can come together as a country and support from afar aswell by donating to those who have sadly lost their homes and everything in them, and to the fire fighters and volunteers who are risking their lives daily. We can often feel helpless from far away but we can do the best we can by donating to those who have lost so much. Sadly our home town in Lake Conjola was hit very badly, and we were extremely lucky to be safe where we were. But our heart goes to the victims who lost so much, and to the place many call home. “È difficile comprendere il livello di devastazione e sofferenza che questi incendi stanno causando” scrive mcKeon nel suo account Instagram. Ringrazio i vigili del fuoco, molti dei quali volontari, per il loro impegno e sacrificio che hanno permesso di salvare migliaia di vite e di abitazioni. (…) Dobbiamo essere uniti e supportare con delle donazioni chi ha perso la casa e tutti i propri averi, e i vigili del fuoco e i volontari che stanno rischiando quotidianamente la vita”.

L’Australia, attualmente governata da un esecutivo negazionista del cambiamento climatico, ha pagato finora un durissimo prezzo alle fiamme, con ad oggi 18 vittime accertate e circa 500 milioni di animali bruciati vivi negli incendi.
