La fuoriclasse di Hong Kong, Siobhan Haughey (27), quattro volte medagliata olimpica, ha annunciato il proprio forfait ai Mondiali di Singapore a causa di un problema alla schiena. La notizia è stata comunicata dalla diretta interessata sulla sua pagina Instagram.
Siobhan Haughey: “Mi sono ritirata dai Campionati Mondiali di Singapore a causa di un persistente infortunio alla schiena. Mi dispiace perdere l’opportunità di competere contro le migliori al mondo, ma in questo momento devo fare ciò che è meglio per me. Come atleti d’élite, siamo abituati a resistere al dolore e alla fatica per andare avanti. Ma a volte, la cosa più coraggiosa e difficile da fare è prendersi cura del proprio corpo e aspettare con pazienza. Per fortuna ho un team straordinario che mi sostiene. Non vedo l’ora di tornare a gareggiare sulla scena mondiale. Nel frattempo farò il tifo da lontano per la squadra di Hong Kong e per i miei amici. Spero di rivedervi tutti presto in piscina.”
Siobhan Haughey è tra i candidati alle elezioni per il nuovo Comitato Atleti di World Aquatics 2025, con le votazioni in corso fino al termine dei Mondiali di Singapore. Insieme a lei sono in lizza anche i nuotatori Wang Shun (Cina), Dimitriy Balandin (Kazakistan), Matthew Sates (Sudafrica), Felix Auböck (Austria), Mykhailo Romanchuk(Ucraina), Andrei Minakov (Russia), Ilya Shymanovich (Bielorussia), Ana Marcela Cunha (Brasile) e Kim Seoyeong(Corea del Sud).
