La guerra iniziò lo stesso anno e impedì la partecipazione di Ester ad un'Olimpiade e una ribalta nel nuoto che le sarebbe spettata.
Nello stesso anno, però, prese parte insieme con altre settantacinque ragazze ad un grande spettacolo acquatico che si svolse a San Francisco il cui successo le aprì una carriera artistica fenomenale.
I suoi film musicali, con qualche spazio sempre dedicato all’acqua, costituirono per il nuoto uno straordinario lancio pubblicitario e costituirono lo spunto per la nascita del nuoto sincronizzato.
